Author Julie Beekman will appear at 7 p.m. March 15 at the Narberth Bookshop, 221 Haverford Ave., in Narberth, to read from her memoir that chronicles a harrowing upbringing in the Philadelphia area. A book signing will follow the reading. Julie now lives in Boulder, Colorado with her wife and their dogs. This heart-wrenching memoir by Julie covers every topic that has become relevant in our culture today, from the #metoo movement to serious flaws in the foster care system. Adopted in Michigan as an infant, Julie's adoptive mother moved her and her three adoptive brothers to Philadelphia and the surrounding after Julie's adoptive father died. Julie was plunged into a childhood and adolescence of severe, horrific abuse, including abuse by two of her adoptive brothers.A junior high school therapist - Dr. Emily Chernicoff - discovered Julie’s situation, and eventually Julie was removed from the adoptive family via Montgomery County courts. Dr. Chernicoff still lives in Philadelphia and will appear at the book reading and signing with Julie.Julie’s entry into the foster care system was fraught with continued abuse – including at the hands of the Warminster police chief who coerced then 15-year-old Julie into a forced relationship based on his power and standing in the community. He also did the same to many other young girls. That abuse was chronicled by the Philadelphia Inquirer cover story by Karl Stark in January 1994 regarding then-Chief Elmer Clawges.Julie chose to write about her experiences with the hopes of helping and empowering others who have suffered similar experiences. She also wants to support less-privileged women and let them know that accountability – and healing – is possible. Her writing is filled with both humor and raw revelations regarding her experience. In addition to being an author, Julie is managing partner of two organic restaurants – one on Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado, and the other in nearby Louisville, Colorado.Reviewers have compared Two Trees, A Memoir as a mix between The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs.
