Press Release from the U.S. Department of Justice, United States Attorney, Eastern District of Pennsylvania (Full story in this week's PGN — online Thursday and in print Friday.)

An indictment 1 was filed today against the Palmer Social Club, located at 601 Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia, and its principal manager, Michael Weiss, charging that the club, a nonprofit corporation, committed federal income tax fraud by filing false tax returns as a nonprofit corporation, announced United States Attorney Michael L. Levy. The indictment further alleges that Weiss prepared false financial statements and gave them to the club’s accountant, knowing the accountant would use them to prepare tax returns and knowing the returns would defraud the Internal Revenue Service.

According to the indictment, the Palmer Social Club, which has held a federal income tax exemption since 1968, was aided and assisted by Michael Weiss, who, through his preparation of fraudulently financial statements, under-reported the amount of gross receipts the club had earned during a two year period, by approximately $1.6 million.

INFORMATION REGARDING THE DEFENDANTS

The Palmer Social Club Philadelphia, PA

Michael Weiss Philadelphia, PA

If convicted, the Palmer Social Club could face a maximum fine of approximately $350,000 under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines; Michael Weiss could face a nine year term of imprisonment, a fine of up to $750,000, and two years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Floyd J. Miller.

you should take him off your friends list if he's such a terrible person, that way you wouldn't have to deal with it anymore. maybe he was trying to generate traffic (ie, money) to the site, and he knows this is a hot button story, i dunno? you apparently have information that he's got some bone to pick with weiss....why doesn't he like him?

first of all, the articles themselves are not the issue, they were printed without personal opinion injecture as they should have been HOWEVER it is obvious that Mark Segal is showing his hand in his personal enjoyment of multiple postings on his own Facebook page - 6x he has posted a link to this story and has asked people to come comment - that is without a doubt "stirring the pot" and he has chosen to make this news his pet project. Not even the Haiti disaster or other devasting news has Mark Segal jumping up and down and posting stories on Tuesdays instead of waiting til Friday or look at the older posts on his FB - never has he repeatedly posted a link to the same article over and over. Grow up people, when you get elected or appointed to Judge or jury and when you have all the facts, even then, I would hope that you would act like an adult and not a cruel and spoiled child.

so he posted the press release the day the news broke...and released the main article later...big deal? it even says "Full story in this week's PGN — online Thursday and in print Friday"

i don't know any of the players involved...it sounds like everyone else is bringing their personal baggage along for the ride. the fbi thinks weiss broke the law and segel reported it...who cares? it is a newspaper after all, is it not?
« Straight2thePoint wrote on Friday, Jan 29 at 07:35 PM »
If it isnt personal vendetta why did Mark segel he told his friends to post comments on his epgn from his facebook? Come on really so childish asking your friends from your personal facebook to come here and bash the weisses? Mixing personal and business and politics much?
« Really now? wrote on Friday, Jan 29 at 12:10 PM »
I consider it gossip and personal when the pgn is normally a Friday paper and Mark Segal took the time to publish the article on Tuesday...oh please, get over it. Every negative comment here is personal cause someone didn't get their way about something,
« phillyburbs wrote on Friday, Jan 29 at 08:15 AM »
@straight2thepoint: um, what part of reporting the news is gossip? the fbi investigated them, they were indicted, and PGN reported it. sounds like you've got an ax to grind...i don't detect a slant or any gossip in the article.
« Straight2thepoint wrote on Friday, Jan 29 at 01:07 AM »
You guys need to get a life. PGN is more of a gossip paper than real story. Obviously Mark Segel has a personal vendetta against the Weisses and how convenient of him to own Newspaper to write whatever he wants. Do you know he personal put other smaller "gay" newspaper out of business? That's right lets all repeat after me now.. MON.. O.. PO...LY .. Yes, Monopoly. You know why no one has yet to have their local gay newspaper still, because people are afraid of him. Can you imagine all the newspaper got put out of business and only the "National Inquirer" puts out news? Give me a break. You guys have the nerves to support this douchebag & piteous excuse for gay newspaper. I know we gay men love drama at times, but this is beyond piognant. Why did I click on my facebook? What a waste of time reading this epgn.

Wow! Fairness I can't agree with you more. You are so right about the pizza place and about no one is pointing a gun at people to tell them to go to their establishments.
« In all Fairness wrote on Thursday, Jan 28 at 02:12 AM »
Wow, when did bashing and accusations without basis become acceptable voicing of opinions? Its utterly disgusting that adults with supposed ability to be rational and sensible would make such allegations - if you were so much "in the know" as you claim to be and if things were so "illegal and illicit" as you state, then why would they fire you in fear that you would roll over on them - face it - ur wrong on all counts. I'm not a plant, but I have been with this organization for some time and do I agree with everything they do, of course not, but I have the option to walk away and I choose to stay and he's no different than Bill Wood, Mel Heifitz, Richard McPeake, the deceased Uncle Mort, Steven Starr or any other bar/restaurant owner and I've worked for almost all of them. Get off your high horse and put your money where your mouth is, open your own club and get a taste of your own medicine. You are most certainly entitled to an opinion, but when you spew unsubstantiated venom, it's obvious that you're a disgruntled ex-employee who did something wrong and got fired or you're a (former) customer who didn't get your way one night, either you didn't get laid or the club dared to charge you $5 to get in, oh the horror that we as club employees should all work for free so that you can have an all expense paid evening of entertainment and alcohol - AND - I won't even dignify your "watered down drinks" comment with a response other than if it was watered down, you probably asked for a glass of water. And really now, this is about the Palmer Social Club and this hateful attack on Michael Weiss by anyone on here, is personal, plain and simple, otherwise, why would you bother. Get a life, don't patronize the Weiss clubs if you feel that strongly and then there's no issue. Out of sight out of mind, no one is holding a gun to your head to put them in your life. And speaking of guns and crime - can anyone else tell me what club opts to spend the extra money to pay for extra police to protect their customers? And dont give me this crap about them contributing to the crime on the 13th Street Corridor, crime is everywhere and all of those businesses there contribute to the success of the other businesses, the more people that come to the area, the more the economy for ALL of the businesses gets stimulated - do you really think 13th Street pizza would be nearly as busy as they are if the clubs weren't there. And the convenience of the pizza place keeps people from leaving the area to grab a bite to eat - it all works together. Let the courts do their job and let the chips fall where they may, period. If they are as horrible as you say, then what are you worried about?

It's about time they got caught. Hopefully this will bring change to the gayborhood. It's an embarrassment as it is now. First step is get rid of the Weiss establishments and the drug induced filth they have working for them.

Not much can be said that hasn't been written or commented about but i know through personal experience that you MUST treat people the way you wish to be treated. Karma & Justice are not defined enough to describe the finality of these very bad people. Rest assured that their days of glory are beyond over and NOT without reason. In this reign of money & abusive unethical power the hammer will fall for ALL who ARE GULITY !

By the way good luck on beating a federal indictement in a recessed economy & dont forget to take HER with you. GOODBye Tre Rios.

R. Morris you make me laugh.

Your specious reasoning, lack of understanding between what is libelous and slanderous and your personal attacks are far removed from the original topic.

My facts are straight and supported. Giving into personal attacks and taunting from people like you is never productive, even though it is good laugh for its absurdity.
« R. Morris wrote on Wednesday, Jan 27 at 08:08 PM »
You guys are morons if not the same person, you spineless swine. Mr. "NoMoreWeissMen" & "13th st. observer". Once again hiding behind a screen name. If you think you can do so much better than the Weiss' and such a Saint then go ahead and open your own bar. By the way isn’t this indictment/article about Palmer social club?

For your information I don't work for the Weiss’, I have my own business and people like you make customer service oriented self starting business owners hate people, especially you. Makes me want to vomit and just shut down my restaurant and put all my 20 employees out of work and people wonder how come the economy is this bad. People like you have nothing better to do than sit on your asses and do nothing much but complain. I don't see you stimulating the economy besides your garbage nonsense. I hope they win and overcome this and shut your pie hole.

I am so glad karma has come around. Do they employ people yes! Do they screw their employees, YES. Mismanage clubs, and take advantage of people and the community yes. They are the worst bosses in the club scene next to 12th scare. They get paranoid and fire staff, they accuse people and help to ruin lives. You show up and you are told you can just go home. They have no decency. If only they put that evil witch Tre in jail with Michael.

Every thing they touch just gets ruined. The only thing I can thank the Weisses for ( beside expensive water downed drinks) is that they gave me a reason to stay home.

I can only hope he gets the jail time he deserves.

Its as simple as this. If your applauding them, your working for them and Im truely sorry if your jobs are jeopardized.

However, these guys are gonna go down for more then fraud.

Im happy the IRS has caught up with them, and Im sure the FBI will be talking with them as well.

In the meantime, I'll continue to support other establishments in the community, and await the sentencing.

Im glad you had a good run Mike, but Im happy to see you go. (I hope you like stripes).

Clearly, R. Morris, you are either a plant for the Weiss Brothers, or you are employed by them. You'd have to be BLIND and DEAF not to see what's transpiring in the organization.

Anyone who's in the know is aware of their business practices and their penchant for trouble. Because of their close ties with the political system, they were able to function here in Philadelphia, and I'm glad the Attorney General's office finally caught on. Now, hopefully, the FBI will get involved, and shut them down completely.

With the development of the 13th street corridor, we were finally beginning to see change. Once the Weiss Brothers took over Woody's (mind you, a hostile takeover), and ran the trio of bars in the gayborhood, the neighborhood has once again become riddle with drugs, prostitution, and crime.

There is a direct correlation here. The crime, and drugs, and prostitution are surging because the Weiss Brothers allow it and hire those individuals who cater to that type of activity. And if you don't believe me, look at the crime reports since the buyout of Bump and Woody's by the organization.

As far as giving goes, don't try to appease this audience or this community with how much they give. Trying to get them to sponsor or host anything is a challenge. It's a challenge because you have to deal with their staff, who are completely hung up on their meth addictions and illicit activities.

If the PGN wants a story, they should do an indepth investigation of what goes down in these establishments.

It's time to put these brothers, and this organization, behind bars. They are a nuisance to the community.

It's funny a person with the username "NoMoreWeissMen" won't reveal his true name, if you work so closely with Michael. I find it despicable that someone like you would hide behind a screename and make such allegations. Could it be that you are afraid to be sued for slanderous accusations. Get your facts straight. It shows in what you write that you already assume that there is a case made against Michael. However again you cowardly hide behind a screen name. You state that what you read in the indictment are all facts, again if you believe that to be true why hide behind a screen name.

Everything you are saying and the words you are using and the fact you allegedly use to work closely with Michael proves that you are just a disgruntled ex employee but worse to wish bad on anyone before their day in court is the most cowardly and callous of all. One must think that someone hiding behind a screen name has more to hide than anyone else or perhaps you are just jealous.

Also to those who think the Weiss’ doesn’t give back to the community, obviously you don’t know jack about them. There are two types of people that give back to the community… One that brags and swank about with everything he/she does and there are the ones that silently gives back because they don’t need to brag to the world. If you want to give to the community and show off, that is your choice but I wonder are you really giving back because the kindness of your heart or for bragging rights. On top of that, I rather have them donate to HIV Awareness, Health Clinics, MANNA, City of Hope, Action Aids, Human Rights and etc. than any stupid “gay” sports team and such. Which I know for a fact I personally know they did donate money to Mazzoni Center, go check their waiting room and you’ll see their names on the donation list on the TV!
